Clarence Pearson Hornung was born in New York City in 1899. He graduated from City College in 1920, after serving for two years in the U.S. Army, Infantry (1918-1919). He studied art at Cooper Union in 1921, and advertising design at New York University from 1921 to 1922. After apprenticing with various art studios in New York City, he established his own freelance studio. Hornung was a versatile artist, designing type, bindings, industrial products, and trademarks in addition to lettering and illustration work. A prolific author, the topics of his books range from graphic design to the development of transportation in the United States. His major work, the two-volume Treasury of American Design, based on the Index of American Design at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. was published in 1972. Hornung's limited edition portfolio of 100 colorplates entitled Gallery of the American Automobile was published in 1965 by his own company, Collectors' Prints, Inc. Among the awards he received were citations from the Limited Editions Club and from Cooper Union . He died in Rockville Centre, New York, in 1997.
