Major Joseph Adolphus Engelhard (1832-1879) was a graduate of the University of North Carolina and attended Harvard Law School, later practicing law in Tarboro, N.C.

Engelhard served in the Confederate Army, attaining the rank of major.

Following the war, he obtained a substantial interest in the Wilmington (N.C.) Journal newspaper, acting as editor.

He was elected to the office of Secretary of State for the state of North Carolina, a post which he held until his death.
