From the description of Letter, 1803. (Duke University Library). WorldCat record id: 38247198

The commercial firm of Brown & Ives, Providence, R.I., was involved in the founding of each of the companies represented in this collection: the Blackstone Manufacturing Company, Mendon, Mass.; the Lonsdale Company, Smithfield, R.I.; and the Hope Company, Scituate, R.I. The Blackstone Manufacturing Company was established in 1808 as a joint stock company by Seth Wheaton and several other Providence capitalists including Brown & Ives. By 1813 it was one of the largest existing cotton manufacturers. By 1845 the factory village section of Mendon, Mass. became the separate town of Blackstone. The Lonsdale Company, which eventually absorbed the Blackstone Company, was first organized about 1830 as a power company. It was incorporated as a cotton manufacturer in 1834 by Brown & Ives and Wilber Kelly. George Kilburn served as agent. The Hope Company, also cotton manufacturers, was incorporated in 1847 by Brown & Ives and others. This company replaced the Hope Manufacturing Company which had existed on the water power site in Scituate, R.I., as early as 1807 and had burned in 1844. Soon after production began Brown & Ives became sole stockholders.
