Abney, James Addison, 1846-1947
Variant namesConfederate soldier, rancher, physician, bank president. Born in 1846 in Tennessee, Abney moved to Texas after the Civil War. Studied medicine in Galveston, Texas, and began his practice in Angelina County. Married Susanna Elizabeth Davis in 1868 and they had three children, Dewitt Fleetwood, Fred, and Edna May. Later moved to Brown County and became a rancher and physician. Founded the town of Winchell, Texas, in 1902. Served as the first president of the Citizen's National Bank of Brownwood, Texas, after he founded the bank in 1906. Dr. Abney died in 1947.
