Iota Gamma Pi was established in 1923 at Trinity College (now Duke University). The honorary fraternity was formed by undergraduate students majoring the natural sciences at Trinity College: Biology, Physics-Engineering, or Chemistry. The goal of the fraternity was to promote interest in issues in natural sciences by facilitating discussions. There were 13 charter members; E.C. Markham served as the first chairman. The executive committee was formed by the chairman as Grand Wizard, and one member from each of the three sciences, also known as Wizards. The celebratory banquet for the new order was held early in 1924. Fraternity members, science faculty, Dean William H. Wannamaker, and representatives from the local newspaper and The Chronicle attended the event. Iota Gamma Pi disbanded in 1939 because members thought it had "outlived its usefulness and necessity on the campus".
