Young Men's Christian Association (North Dakota State University)
Variant namesOrganized in 1901 as a recreation and study program. In 1916, a Y building fund was established. With financial assistance in the form of a matching grant from John D. Rockefeller, the building was constructed in 1916. Ray Sweetman, a professional secretary, was hired as membership increased. The YMCA building served as the campus social center until its destruction by a tornado in 1957. After that, the North Dakota Agricultural College Library and the South Engineering building served as YMCA headquarters. A house located off campus was purchased in 1970 to serve as headquarters and was sold in 1980. Space was rented in the United Campus Ministries building. Several apartment buildings were built and managed by the YMCA from 1968 to 1982.
