N. C. Fassett, 1900-1954, was a professor of botany at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. The earliest vegetation mapping in the area was done by Fassett and his colleagues and students, who during the period 1929 to 1952 published 37 "Preliminary Reports" and four books on Wisconsin plant families.
