Brodie, Benjamin C. (Benjamin Collins), Sir, 1817-1880
Variant namesChemist and mathematician; Fellow of the Royal Society; Professor of Chemistry, 1855-1872. Having graduated from Oxford in mathematics, he studied chemistry privately, and worked for a while (c. 1845) under Liebig at Giessen. He discovered graphite and formulated a mathematical alternative to the atomic theory, termed 'chemical calculus,' which was ingenious but wrong.
