Howard enlisted in Company A, 9th Arkansas Infantry, in July 1861. He served in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi and Georgia until he was wounded near Resaca, Georgia in May 1864. After the war, he went into business in Columbus, Georgia and later became a Baptist minister.
