William Stanley Mead was born on 16 April 1846 in Washington, Daviess County, Indiana. He was fifteen when he enlisted in the 6th Indiana Infantry Regiment in 1861 along with two other family members; Levis S. and Alfred D. Mead. He participated in numerous battles and was wounded and captured in 1864. He was imprisoned at Andersonville Prison until his release from there in November 1864, and discharged from military service in February 1865. He married twice, was the father of six children and spent the remainder of his life in Spencer, Owen County, Indiana. Mr. Mead passed away on 28 December 1934.
