Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis

Hide Profile

The Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis formed in 1912 from a federation of forty Protestant churches associated with the Indianapolis Ministerial Association. The executive secretaries and directors have been: Rev. Morton C. Pearson, Charles H. Winders, Ernest Evans, Dr. Howard J. Baumgartel, Lawrence T. Hosie, Rev. Robert S. Koenig, Paul McClure, and Rev. Dr. Angelique Walker-Smith. The first headquarters were in the downtown YMCA. The organization moved to North Meridian Street in 1956. The Federation helped establish the Indiana Council of Churches in 1943 and the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA in 1950. The organization began to utilize television as a religious education and outreach tool in the 1950s. Through the 1960s the Federation strove to better serve poor and minority populations. H.O.M.E., an ecumenical housing program for low-income families, was formed in 1967. The Federation extended its membership to non-Protestant denominations in the 1970s. Other advances in the 1970s concerned race relations, assistance to the poor, and chaplaincy.
