The national G.A.R. association organized in 1866. South Dakota's G.A.R. first organized as the Dept. of Dakota under the provisional jurisdiction of the State of Iowa in 1883 with 13 existing posts. The first Annual Encampment of the Department of Dakota G.A.R. was held in Sioux Falls in 1884 and the number of posts had increased from 13 to 62.
