The eminent Irish poet Desmond Egan was born July 15, 1936, in Athlone, County Westmeath, Ireland.to Thomas and Kathleen (Garland) Egan. He received a B.A. degree from Maynooth University and an M.A. from University College, Dublin. Egan has published numerous volumes of verse, a collection of prose writings, and translations of Euripides and Sophocles. He has contributed to the Irish times, the Review of Irish literature, the Times literary supplement, and many other periodicals. His poems have been translated into a variety of languages, including Bulgarian, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, and Russian. In addition to participating in many other literary conferences and festivals, Desmond Egan is artistic director of the Gerard Manley Hopkins Summer School, which he co-founded with Richard O'Rourke in 1987. Among his many awards are the American Society of Poetry Award (1984), the Chicago Haymarket Literary Award (1987), the Pilgrim's Progress Prize of Stanford University (1993), and the Bologna Literary Award (1998). In 1981 he married Vivienne Abbot. They have two children.
