The fifth child of Sam and Margaret Lea Houston, Antoinette Power "Nettie" Houston was born at Huntsville, Texas, on 1852 January 20. She was educated at Baylor Female Seminary in Independence and Austin Female College. In 1877, she married William Lorraine Bringhurst (1844-1913), a professor at the Texas Military Institute, whose career later took them to Texas A&M and public schools in Bryan and San Antonio, Texas. The couple had five children, but only one, Nettie Houston Bringhurst Bush, survived to adulthood.

Nettie Houston Bringhurst was active in a number of organizations, including the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, which she served as Historian and Poet Laureate.

Mrs. Bringhurst died on 1932 December 5 of injuries received in an automobile accident. Her funeral was held in the Alamo and she was buried in San Antonio.
