Porter, (Feb. 9, 1791-July 6, 1834) served as Gov. of Mich., 1831-1834. Prior to that he served in the Penn. legislature, was a lawyer and a U.S. Marshall for the Eastern District of Penn. (Mich. biographies, v. 2, p. 201.) Williams (May 4, 1782-Oct. 20, 1854) served as Capt. of the artillery in the War of 1812 and was taken prisoner when Detroit fell. He later returned to Detroit and opened a mercantile business. Williams was prominent in Mich. politics, serving as Delegate from the 1st District to the Constitutional Convention of 1835; as Delegate from Wayne Co. to the 2nd Convention of Assent, 1836; and as one of the first trustees of the Univ. of Mich. in 1821. Williams prepared the first charter for Detroit, served as its first Mayor, and for six additional terms, 1824-1846. He was Senior Maj. Gen. of the State militia when he died.
