Jean Tilford Palmer served as General Secretary of Barnard College from 1949-1969. She was responsible for the college's development plan. Upon her retirement the College named the Undergraduate Association Board Room, the Jean T. Palmer Room in her honor. She came to Barnard in 1946 as Director of Admissions. During World War II she joined the U.S. Naval Reserve as a W.A.V.E. (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) captain. In 1945 she was named director of the W.A.V.E.s. Prior to that she served as business manager of the Association of Junior Leagues of America for 14 years. Ms. Palmer was a native of Omaha, Nebraska, and a graduate of Bryn Mawr College.
