Native of Wilkes County, N.C.; son of George Jones and Phebe Foster; husband of Sarah Joyce Lenoir, from North Carolina, and Emily Cathcart Thompson, from Greenville, S.C.; owner of "Pleasant Mound" plantation in Laurens County, S.C.; served in the S.C. State Militia as colonel, 1820-1830, brigadier general of the Tenth Brigade, 1830-1835, and major general of the Fifth Division, 1835-1842; represented Laurens District in the General Assembly as member of the S.C. House, 1828-1830 and 1832-1838; and the S.C. Senate, 1838-1842; director of the South Carolina and Charleston Railroad Company.
