William D. Dean was born in N.H. in 1925 and enlisted in the Army at Manchester, N.H. in 1943. At the time of his enlistment he was single and had completed four years of high school. Dean joined the 10th Mountain Division while it was engaged in mountain and winter warfare training at Camp Hale, Colo. He was assigned to Company L of the 90th Infantry Regiment, but later transferred to Company K of the 86th Infantry Regiment. Dean was also stationed at Camp Swift, Tex. before being sent to Italy. During combat operations near Torbole he received the Bronze Star medal for bravery in April 1945.
