Son of the pharmaceutical chemist Karl Gottfried Hagen. Professor at the Albertus-Universität in Königsberg (today Kaliningrad) in what was then East Prussia. Having studied both art history and literary history, Hagen was at first appointed professor of German language and literature (Germanistik), in 1825; in 1830 the university's first professorship for art history was created for him, and he held that appointment until his death.
