Colonel Trueman Cross was born in Maryland and entered the United States Army in 1814. He rose to the rank of Colonel, and during the early days of the Mexican War served as Chief of the Quartermaster's Department of General Zachary Taylor's Army of Occupation until his death in April 1846 while horseback riding, probably at the hands of Mexican guerillas.

Nathaniel Wyche Hunter graduated from West Point in 1833 and served in the Florida Seminole campaigns before assignment to the 2nd U. S. Dragoons on the eve of the Mexican War.
