Lack, Mary E., 1846-1864

Mary E. Lack (1846-1864) was born in Loudoun County, Va., the daughter of William (ca. 1810-1893) and Mary Lack (d. 1881). Her father worked as a gardener in Leesburg. They were active members of St. James Episcopal Church, and it was there that Lack met her fiancée, Thomas H. Magee (b. 1837), a private in the 18th Mississippi Regiment. In her diary, she describes her exchanges with him and other soldiers, particularly those of the 18th and 21st Mississippi regiments, during and following their occupation of Leesburg in 1861. Lack died on 27 July 1864, less than two years after her last journal entry, and is buried next to her parents in the Old Episcopal Church Cemetery in Leesburg, Va. Thomas H. Magee enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861. He was wounded in the Battle of Cold Harbor on 30 May 1864, and was furloughed for thirty days. Official records indicate he deserted from the Confederate Army in Feb. 1865; it is uncertain what became of him after the war.
