Joseph Charles Gilman, a native of Nebraska, received a B.S. (1912) and M.S. (1914) from the University of Missouri, and a Ph. D. (1915) from the Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Gilman served in the following academic positions during his career: Professor of Biology (1915-1918) at Rippon College; Assistant Plant Pathologist (1918-1921); Assistant Professor (1921-1924), Associate Professor (1924-1934), and Professor (1934-1966) of Botany at Iowa State College (University). His research interests included the study of fungi and other parasites, and he wrote several articles and books on the subject, including a Manual of Soil Fungi (1945, 1957).
