Eleanor Ann Saddlemyer, born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, taught at the University of Victoria Department of English from 1963 to 1971. She left the University of Victoria in 1971 to teach at Victoria College, Department of English, University of Toronto. In 1965 she and Robin Skelton organized a William Butler Yeats Symposium at the University of Victoria; papers presented at this symposium were later published as "The World of W.B. Yeats: Essays in Perspective". In 1988, Saddlemyer was appointed Master of Massey College, University of Toronto. She received an honorary D.Litt. degree from the University of Victoria in 1989.
