John Stead Mattison was born in Yorkshire, England, ca. 1822. He came to the U.S. at the age of 16, first settling in N.Y. then Chicago around the age of 21. In May 1849 he went to Calif. by land. After 5 years he moved back east to Michigan City, where he married Lila Miles in 1859. They returned to Calif. by way of the Isthmus of Panama, settling near Santa Cruz. He died there on Jan. 26, 1890. He had two sons.

Frank Mattison was born in Santa Cruz Feb. 5, 1860. He worked in farming, as a grocer and eventually became a politician. He married Carrie A. Peck Nov. 6, 1883. He died at home in Santa Cruz on Jan. 15, 1920. He had two daughters.
