Daniel Bates came to Australia in 1912. His fiancee followed and they were married in 1914. Daniel owned a butcher shop in Ipswich, until his untimely death in 1917, when he cut his hand in the butcher shop. He was survived by his wife, Alice Kate Giles and three children, Henry, Frederick George and Daniel Giles.
