The Kent State University Alumni Association promotes continuing dialogue among current students and alumni of Kent State University. The Alumni Association provides various programs, awards, services, and special events for its members, and has a number of regional and special interest chapters. The University's first president, John McGilvrey, reportedly planned for an alumni association even before the campus had been constructed. Through the years, the Alumni Association has often played a prominent role in university academics and athletics. In 1934, it helped draft proposals to transform Kent State from a college to a university and, in 1967, it helped establish the Distinguished Teaching Awards.
