The first catalogue of Indiana University in 1831 announced "To such as may wish it, and who have completed the Latin course, Hebrew and French will be taught." It was not until 1868, however, that modern languages (including French) were made an alternative to Latin for students engaged in "scientific" course work. French ceased to be considered a "special study" by 1871, and was incorporated into the regular course of instruction.

French (along with German) is found listed under the Department of Modern Languages, by 1876, and Italian is offered as an elective in 1881. The Department of Romance Languages was established for the 1885-1886 school year, offering French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. On June 8, 1934, the Department of Romance Languages was divided into the Department of French and Italian, chaired by Prof. Bert Edwards Young (1934-1945), and the Department of Spanish, chaired by Prof. John Hill. Throughout the years several faculty have served as chair of the department including Lander MacClintock, interim chairman 1945-1947 and acting chairman 1953-1955; Prof. Samuel F. Will from 1947-1965; Prof. Quentin M. Hope from 1965-1977; Prof. Samuel N. Rosenberg from 1977-1983; Prof. Emanuel Mickel from 1984-1994; and Rosemary Lloyd from 1995-1997. Currently Andrea Ciccarelli serves as department chair.
