Matilda ( Tilly ) Jaynes Tyler (d 21 August 1992) graduated from Barnard College, New York, in 1951, and went on to receive a teaching degree from Southern Connecticut State College. She taught for 23 years, retiring from Wallingford (Connecticut) High School in 1979. She gained recognition as an authority on Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), author, and built up at her home in New Haven, Connecticut, a rare collection of his works. In 1988, she donated copies of some of the press-cuttings, correspondence and notes in her collection to the University of Sussex, and made five subsequent additions. These copies constitute the present collection. She bequeathed her collection to the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University, USA.
