Joseph Hampton Atkinson (1900-1984) was born in Dublin, Texas. He served his entire career in the United States Air Force, including posts as commander of bombardment groups during World War II. After World War II, he served as commanding general of the Alaskan Air Command from 1946 to 1949, and as commanding general of the Air Defense Command from 1956 to 1961. Before his retirement in 1961, he received the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star, and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
