The Pennsylvania State University Office of Residence Life, a division of Housing, Food Services, and Residence Life within Student Affairs, is dedicated to creating a safe and comfortable environment for students living, studying, and working on campus. Included in their mission statement is a call to foster academic growth and a sense of community. The Office was originally formed in the late 1960s and called the Office of Residential Life, but its current name and mission were established in the late 1980s. Administrators of the Office ensure that respect and responsibility are upheld in every function overseen by Residence Life. Operational for each Penn State campus, Residence Life plans services and programs in collaboration with the Office of Student Engagement, mitigates the strain of transition to the University Park campus, works to combat health and safety issues endangering students, facilitates student interaction, sustains and ameliorates the Special Living Options on campus, and develops university partnerships with residence halls.
