Organized at the state convention of the Progressive Miners of America at Gillespie, Ill. in 1932 as a group dedicated to providing strike relief to miners and their families and advocating labor legislation, labor education and " independent working class political action". Agnes Burns Wieck, who had been active in organizing the women, was elected as the first president of the national organization, which only survived 2 years.
