In 1942, he left Durham to serve in World War II with the 65th General Hospital, where he was colonel and chief of medical services (1942-1945). In 1945, he returned to Duke to serve as an assistant physician, professor of medicine, professor community health sciences, and director of student health services (1950-1967).
