Tau Sigma Delta, an honorary fraternity for students of architecture and allied arts, was organized in 1913 at the University of Michigan through the efforts of Herbert L. Burgess and three other senior students at the College of Architecture. After three years of trial, the fraternity gradually expanded to other schools, which elected honor students who were a majority of the way toward a degree in departments allied with architecture and landscape design. Also, for the continuity of the workings of a chapter from term to term, it became proper to elect from the junior groups who were about to become seniors. Tau Sigma Delta developed from a senior honor society in architecture and landscape design to a fraternity in architectural engineering, architectural design, landscape design, painting, sculpting, planning, decorative design, interior decoration, and all the arts allied with architecture.

Tau Sigma Delta derived its name from the first letters of each of the words of its motto, "Technicitai Sophoi Kai Dexioi" which translated means "Craftsman, Skilled and Trained." The purpose of this fraternity is to "further the interests of excellent professionalism and high ethical standards within the professions of architecture and allied arts."

The Michigan Chapter is incorporated under the state laws of Michigan as a "non-profitable" association and educational society. During the eight decades of the history of Tau Sigma Delta, the Michigan Chapter has been one of the most active members and has played a key role in promoting the interests of this organization.

The organizational structure of Tau Sigma Delta is similar to most other fraternities in the United States. It consists of the Grand Chapter, the Advisory Council, the institutional chapters and the annual meeting.

Today, Tau Sigma Delta has over 30 active member institutions and more than 4,500 members across the country.
