Robin W. Winks, a professor of history at Yale University during the major part of his research for "The Blacks in Canada: A History" (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1971), received his doctorate from Johns Hopkins University in 1957. His career had been spent for the most part at Yale University, beginning as an instructor in 1957 through his appointment in 1977 as Master of Berkeley College at Yale. Additionally, Winks was a visiting professor at the University of Malaya (1962-1963), and the University of Sidney (1963) and was a State Department lecturer in the Middle East (1966) and West Africa (1972). He conducted research in a number of areas besides race relations, including Canadian-American diplomatic and cultural relations, and the role of Australia, New Zealand and Britain in the Pacific. Among his publications are "Failed Federations: Decolonization and The British Empire" (1970), "Myth of the American Frontier" (1971), and "The Relevance of Canadian History" (1978). He died in 2003.

Robin William Evert Winks was born in Indiana on December 5, 1930. He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1952 and received an M.A. in Maori studies from Victoria University as a Fulbright Scholar in New Zealand. He received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins in 1957. Winks joined Yale's history department in 1957, serving as its chairman from 1996 to 1999. From 1999 to 2000, he was the Vyvyan Harmsworth visiting professor of American history at Oxford University. He was a prolific author and in 1987 published "Cloak and Gown: Scholars in America's Secret War," an account of the Central Intelligence Agency's relationship with major American universities. Winks died in New Haven, Connecticut, on April 7, 2003.
