Dr. Francis M. du Mont was born in Baden, Switzerland. At the age of 10, he moved to Fribourg, located in the French-speaking part of Switzerland and graduated from Valentin College in France. He came to New York, where he taught French and Latin at the Robert Louis Stevenson School and served as head of the modern languages department at Barnard School for Boys. While in New York, he obtained both a master's and a doctorate from New York University. He spoke French, English, Latin, German and Spanish. He joined Penn State in 1931 as a professor and head of the Department of Romance Languages. In 1937, the French government decorated Dr. du Mont with the Palmes Academique, an honor conferred to men of letters, artists and teachers as recognition of distinguished work in a particular field. He retired from Penn State in 1945 with emeritus rank.
