Cyrus Leland was born in Troy, Doniphan County, Kansas on 12 April 1910. He earned his law degree from Washburn College in Topeka in 1932 and joined the United States Army in 1939. He reached the rank of captain by the time he was discharged in 1943 due to a back injury, and he served in the Aleutian Islands. After the war, Leland moved around the country, from Arizona and Texas to Oregon, working with various insurance companies. He married Alice Clark in Texas, and they moved to Olathe, Kansas where they bought the Nicholson Title Insurance Company in the early 1950s. They sold this company and moved to Washington D.C. and thereafter around the country some more, both before and after Alice died in 1982. They often came back to Troy, however, and Cyrus Leland died 2 April 1992 in the hospital in St. Joseph, Missouri, not far from Troy. [Kansas Chief. "Cyrus Leland dies at age 81." 9 April 1992 {p. 1}]
