John Pierce St. John served as the eighth governor of Kansas from 1879-1882. An avowed opponent of liquor, he strongly supported legislative action to provide constitutional prohibition for Kansas. He served two terms as Governor and was defeated in his bid for re-election to a third term in 1882 by the Democratic candidate, George W. Glick. In 1884, St. John was nominated as the Prohibition Party's presidential candidate. Although defeated by Grover Cleveland, his campaign had an influential impact on the voting. After this defeat he continued to travel on behalf of prohibition although his formal ties to the Prohibition Party ended in 1896.
