History of the Oberammergau Passion Play The Passion Play has been performed since 1634 as a tradition in the village of Oberammergau, Germany. The play depicts the life and death of Jesus. After months of suffering from the bubonic plague, the residents of Oberammergau made a vow to perform the play every 10 years if they were spared. After 1674 the date was changed so as to fall every ten years beginning in 1680. The play continues to be performed as of 2010.
