The Communication Program at the University of Minnesota was established in 1945. It offered an interdisciplinary course as an option for students to fulfill their Freshman English requirement. The program was directed by Harold B. Allen and resided in the Department of General Studies. In 1957 General Studies changed its name to the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies.
In 1967, the Communication Program was assigned to the College of Liberal Arts. It was not attached to any one department, but shared staff from various departments. Daniel Bryan was the chair. In 1982, the communication program was absorbed into the newly created Composition and Communication Program. It provided courses combining written and oral communication and continued to reside in the College of Liberal Arts.
