Summer session at the University of Minnesota was originally geared towards continuing education of secondary teachers in the state. The first summer session was held in 1881, with the courses being under the direction of the Minnesota State Department of Public Instruction. Shortly after the arrival of the University's third president, George Edgar Vincent, in 1911, the Regents became responsible for the administration of the summer courses, with and the offerings expanded to include courses for traditional university students and the general public. The summer session at the University of Minnesota is currently one of the largest in the country, offering traditional academic coursework for college students, intensive courses, study abroad opportunities, courses for secondary teachers, non-credit programs for children, programs for high school students and independent and distance learning courses.
