The Watauga Medal Committee was established at North Carolina State University in 1975 under the leadership of Chancellor John T. Caldwell. The duties of the committee were to recognize people who rendered notable and significant service to the mission of North Carolina State University.
The first members of the committee were Professor Eugene P. Brantly, Dr. R. G. Carson, Jr., Professor T. Waller George, Professor Man M. Sawhney, Dr. Leroy C. Saylor, and Professor Larry W. Watson. Ex officio members were Chancellor Rudolph Pate, Vice Chancellor for Foundations and Development; Marcus B. Crotts, Chairman of the Board of the Alumni Association; Ron L. Jessup, President of the Student Government; and Dr. Samuel B. Tove, Vice Chairman of Faculty Senate. Administrators, faculty, alumni, students and friends of the University were also invited to submit nominations accompanied by a statement of specific contributions made by the nominee. As of 2012, the committee still continues to be active.
