The 49th Indiana Volunteer Regiment served the Union during the Civil War. Though some Indianas supported the South and the Confederate cause, the State stayed with the Union. The closest action that the State of Indiana saw was in 1863 when Confederate General John Hunt Morgan made his way through southern Indiana. Indiana contributed 208,367 men to the Union and 24,416 lost their lives.
