Tech 4 Warren George Merritt was born on 11 November 1920 in White Plains, Georgia. He attended Georgia School of Technology (Georgia Tech) from 1937-1941, where he joined the Naval Reserve Officer's Training Corps. He left Georgia Tech without taking a degree and went to work for Glenn L. Martin (aircraft testing) in Baltimore. He married Evelyn Lane on 30 July 1942. After working for Martin for one year, Merritt was drafted. He was inducted on 11 February 1943, entered the U.S. Army on 18 February 1943 at Baltimore, and was sent to Camp McCain in Granada, Mississippi. In November 1943, Merritt was selected for the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) and sent to the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio, where he enrolled in the Advanced Electrical Engineering program. He was there for 36 weeks in 1944. When ASTP was cancelled, he was sent to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, as an Engineer Aide (Atomic Research). He was discharged on 24 February 1946 at Fort McPherson, Georgia. Merritt returned to Georgia Tech to finish his degree in Electrical Engineering in March 1947. He worked for Sandia National Laboratories for the rest of his career. Warren Merritt died on 22 July 1983.

Evelyn Lane Merritt was born on 12 November 1920. She attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia from 1938-1942, graduating with a teaching degree. In May 1945, she took a job as a clerk for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Manhattan District, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. On 31 August 1945, she began teaching at Shinliver School, Anderson County, Tennessee. Evelyn Lane Merritt died in 2004.
