The Brokstein family were of Russian Jewish ancestry who immigrated to the United States and settled in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn. There were four children in the family. In the 1930s, they owned Brokstein & Brokstein Gasoline Service Station in Garden City, N.Y. Morris Brokstein was an employee of Central Hanover Bank & Trust Company. Members of the Brokstein family were also involved in the manufacture of women's hats, under the businesses Brokstein Hat Works and also Marchant Hat Company. Both businesses operated at 25-27 West Houston Street in Manhattan. Members of the Brokstein family lived at 1769 Stillwell Avenue in Bensonhurst from 1923 to 1987.
