William P. Kirkwood was born on January 9, 1867 in Ohio. He attended Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, earning his bachelor's degree in 1890. In 1922, he earned his M.A. from the University of Missouri in journalism while on sabbatical from the University of Minnesota. William Kirkwood first came to the University of Minnesota in 1914 when he was appointed as editor of bulletins in the Department of Agriculture; he taught farm students how to write less technical farm pamphlets.
While working as bulletin editor and director of publications, he started a course in newspaper reporting for St. Paul campus students, later opened to all interested students. These courses were the beginning of the University of Minnesota's School of Journalism. Soon the work requirement of these courses grew too large to be handled solely by Professor Kirkwood. He remained in charge of the division of publications, while the journalism courses were taught by other instructors. Professor Kirkwood also helped develop the Editor's Short Course in 1917. This program, offered annually, brought editors and publishers of country newspapers together on the St. Paul campus. In 1931, he was appointed professor of journalism at the University of Minnesota and held this rank until 1936, when he retired. Professor Kirkwood died on April 9, 1957 at the age of 90.
