Alabama. Department of Public Safety. Highway Patrol.
The Alabama Highway Patrol was created on December 5, 1935, by Governor Bibb Graves. Prior to this, twelve "highway officers" who were responsible for statewide enforcement of highway laws had worked under the auspices of the State Highway Department during Gov. Benjamin Miller's term. Recognizing the inadequacy of this situation, Gov. Graves created the Highway Patrol and increased the number of officers from twelve to seventy-five. The first chief was Walter K. McAdory. He was assisted by VanBuren Gilbert, captain for north Alabama, and E. Potter Smith, captain for south Alabama.
