Major General (MG) Thomas J. Thorne was born in Savannah, Georgia on 17 July 1918. He graduated from the Citadel in 1938 and was commissioned in the United States (U.S.) Army in October 1939. He began active duty on 27 November 1940 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and served in the 76th Coast Artillery Regiment until May 1942. After completing the Battery Officers Course at Fort Monroe, Virginia, and attending the Antiaircraft School at Camp Davis, North Carolina, he received further training at MacArthur Field, Long Island, New York, in the spring of 1944. Thorne then was sent overseas to London, England, and assisted with the antiaircraft defenses of Paris, France. His unit participated in the Battle of the Bulge as part of Ninth Army. After World War II, he received a commission in the Army Reserves as a lieutenant colonel. Thorne served in the U.S. Army for thirty-five years on both active duty and in the reserves.
