Vickery, James B.
James B. Vickery was born in Unity, Maine in 1917 and grew up there. He was educated at Maine Central Institute and Bates College and received a master's degree at the University of Maine. He worked as a teacher in the Maine school system for many years and was a scholar, editor, historian and researcher as well as one of the foremost experts on Maine history. Over a more than thirty year period he collected thousands of books, letters, and other documents relating to Maine history and Maine families, with a special emphasis on Bangor and its surrounding areas. After his death in 1997, his extensive collection of Maine historical books and documents was divided among several institutions, including Fogler Library.

Company E of the 6th Maine volunteer Infantry was raised in April of 1861 at the State Arsenal at Bangor. They were mustered in at Portland on 15 July 1861. By the end of July, they were in Virginia and assigned to Hancock's 6th Corps. The Sixth participated in the following battles: Lee's Mills, Williamsburg, Garnett's Farm, Crampton's Pass, Antietam, Fredricksburg, Salem Heights, Gettysburg (Reserve), Rappahannock Station (Co. E took casualties, records in collection), Locust Grove, Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg. The term of service of the regiment expired on 15 July 1864. They arrived in Portland on 22 July and were mustered out on 15 August 1864.
Company A 2nd Maine Veteran Volunteer Cavalry was raised in Augusta in October and November of 1863. They were mustered in on 2 January 1864. The regiment was assigned to the Department of the Gulf. They served first at New Orleans, then in the vicinity of Pensacola, Florida at Fort Barrancas and the Navy Yard. The regiment participated in raids to Marianna, and the engagement at Milton, FL. They took part in the Mobile, AL, campaign participating in the battle of Evergreen, AL. The regiment ended the war at the Spanish Fort near Blakely, FL. They were part of 16 corps. Immediately following the end of hostilities the 2nd were part of the occupation forces in Florida. The regiment was mustered out on 6 Dec 1865, and discharged at Augusta on 21 Dec 1865.
