Bertalan (1914-2007) served as a cryptographer with the Navy during World War II.

After the war, Bertalan earned a doctorate in library science from the Catholic University of America (Washington D.C.) and, after nineteen years working for the US Office of Education Library, he served as director of the library schools at the University of Oklahoma and the Texas Woman's University. He eventually retired and settled in California.
