David Lloyd Lawton was born on March 20, 1924 in New York City, the son of Charles and Gladys (Cooke) Lawton. He earned a B.A. from Hiram University (1950), a M.A. from Case Western Reserve University (1950), and a Ph. D. from Michigan State University (1963). Prof. Lawton taught English and Linguistics at CMU, 1968-1989. He also taught as a visiting Professor of Linguistics at the University of Guadalajara in Mexico, 1960-1962, and was a Fulbright Guest Lecturer in Quito, Ecuador, in 1971. Well respected in the linguistics field, he received the John Russell Kelley Award for his original research from the University of Michigan in 1963. His area of specialty was Creole and Jamaican languages. Prof. Lawton was active in his professional organizations, particularly the Michigan Linguistics Society. On March 25, 1959, he married Jean M. Hann in Jameston (N.Y.). Together they had two sons, Robin L. and Martin E. Prof. Lawton died on July 6, 1989 at Mercy Hospital in Grayling (Mich.).
